FAQ: Services

Do you have any questions about Advanced Industries’ manufacturing services? Below are the answers to some of the most common questions customers ask us when looking for a machining partner.

If you don’t see your question here, or want to talk to a member of our team about a specific project, contact us today or request a quote.

What is First Article Inspection (FAI), and when is it required?

First Article Inspection (FAI) is part of the quality assurance process in which the first part produced, or a first-batch sample, is thoroughly inspected and validated. This helps to guarantee that the part meets all applicable drawings, specifications, and other requirements before going into full production. It’s often a requirement in the aerospace, defense, automotive and other regulated industries.

We handle the inspection, documentation, and reporting where FAI is required.

Which certifications does Advanced Industries maintain?

Advanced Industries has the following certifications:

  • ISO 9001:2015
  • AS9100D
  • ITAR Registration
  • SAM Registration
  • Small Business Certification

What does SAM Registered mean?

System for Award Management, or SAM Registration is a mandatory process any business, nonprofit, or individual must complete in order to be eligible to bid or work with federal agencies. Registration is free, and must be renewed every 12 months.

What is PPAP (Production Part Approval Process), and how does it apply to precision machining?

PPAP is a standardized process to verify that a supplier consistently produces parts that meet all engineering and quality requirements. It’s common in automotive manufacturing, but the same PPAP principles are also valuable when it comes to precision machining for other industries too. In these industries, PPAP documentation is required for new parts, significant process changes, or any corrections of non-conformance.

We provide detailed documentation, including all material certifications, process controls, dimensional results, and validation data when PPAP is a requirement.

When should I choose domestic manufacturing versus overseas production?

When your application needs to have faster lead times, top quality, and industry or regulatory compliance, domestic manufacturing is the way to go. Overseas manufacturers may offer lower unit costs for very high volumes of parts; however, lead times will typically be longer, product quality can vary, and you run the risk of supply chain and tariff issues.

How does Advanced Industries support complex or tight-tolerance parts?

Manufacturing complex parts requires advanced equipment and experience. We achieve and hold tight tolerances with ultra-precision 2, 3, 8, and 9 axis CNC lathes, horizontal and vertical CNC milling centers, Swiss machine centers, and multi-function CNC machines, skilled machinists, and strong quality systems.

What environmental and regulatory compliances does Advanced Industries support?

Advanced Industries, Inc. helps customers meet critical environmental and regulatory requirements, including RoHS, REACH, and ITAR. We work closely with customers so that all materials, processes, and documentation are in compliance, especially for aerospace and defense applications, as well as global supply chains.

How do supply chain issues like tariffs or material shortages affect cost and delivery?

Tariffs, material availability, and global supply disruptions or incidents can cause significant changes to pricing and lead times. Advanced Industries does all manufacturing work in the US, and is often able to mitigate these risks thanks to our strong supplier relationships. We open the lines of communication early, keep pricing transparent, and stay proactive when sourcing materials to help you avoid surprises.

What finishing options are available for metal parts?
